In the project GAME-ER, we will concentrate on the two regional clusters around Lyon and Bordeaux.

The French video game industry is based on a strong concentration in Paris, but also on the existence of dynamic regional clusters. In the project GAME-ER, we will concentrate on the two regional clusters around Lyon and Bordeaux.

At first glance, each of the two clusters is linked to a historical company.

The Bordeaux cluster has recently attracted attention with the success of the Asobo studio and the creation of a Ubisoft studio. An important part of the Bordeaux ecosystem was born after the bankruptcy of Kalisto, one of the first success stories in French video games. Kalisto was created in Bordeaux by Nicolas Gaume in 1990. The company has enjoyed rapid success, and its turnover approached 20 million euros in 1999. The listing on the stock exchange shortly before the bursting of the Internet bubble caused its bankruptcy in 2002. Since then, Kalisto has spread and the association Bordeaux Games was founded by companies wishing to bring together the actors of the game in New Aquitaine.

New Aquitaine is a French administrative region, created by the 2015 territorial reform, and resulting from the merger of the former regions Aquitaine, Limousin and Poitou-Charentes. Covering an area of 84,036 km2, it is the largest region in France, with a population of 6M inhabitants. The cluster is currently engaged in a process of rapprochement and expansion. Bordeaux Games is merging with the Angoulême cluster to form SO Games (110 companies, 1,000 jobs, €110 million in sales).
