Dundee cluster, the small city with a big impact on the European gaming scene.

While the largest concentration of video game companies in the UK is in London, we have seen among others the creation of a localised cluster in the city of Dundee in Scotland. Dundee it’s the 4th largest city in Scotland with a population of around 150.000. However, the city also is a regional employment and education center, with around 325,000 people within 30 minutes’ drive of the city center and 860,000 people within one hour.

Traditionally the economy of the area had been characterised by textile and heavy industry. Employment in Dundee changed dramatically however during the 1980s with the loss of nearly 10,000 manufacturing jobs due to closure of the shipyards, cessation of carpet manufacturing and the disappearance of the jute trade. However, over time, despite economic periods of difficulties, the city has managed to reinvent itself focusing on culture and services. A notable example of this reinvention is the opening of the V&E Design Museum in 2018. Dundee is also home to two Universities: Abertay University and the University of Dundee.

One key industry that is reshaping the current economic, productive and social landscape is the Video Games industry. According to some commentators, Dundee is the capital of Video Games in Scotland and has seen over the years the creation and establishment of successful ventures. The world-wide successful game Grand Theft Auto was created in Dundee in the 1990s by a studio called DMA Design, today known as Rockstar North. Prior to that, DMA also was the creator of another successful game called Lemmings. Since then, Rockstar moved its offices to Edinburgh (in the early 2000s), however over time a Video Games cluster has appeared with companies of different size and shape.

There are around 40 companies, from start-ups to larger established companies, although this figure is not confirmed by official sources. Indeed, Dundee is today home of several studios, and this includes companies such as 4J Studios, which is the creator of the console version of Minecraft. The Video Games industry appears to be driving productivity and together with it a reinvention of the economy of the region.

An important role in the establishment of this cluster has been undoubtedly played by Abertay University. Abertay is a small-size University, and it was the first in the world to offer degrees in the area of Video Games. Today the university has about 1,000 students in various degrees related to gaming and about 250 graduates every year, which is a rich vein of talent entering the market for local employers. Moreover, many of the studios (past and present) were created by former students, including for example DMA. The University hosts some of the studios at its premises, and clearly is one of the key drivers of the cluster. The University also is the home of the £11.5M Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise (InGAME) R&D center. It brings together researchers, industry and businesses experts, focusing on developing further the industry in the local area.
